wordy wednesday: sigh {october 4, 2023}

The summer veggies are slowly going away until next year. Yesterday was the last corn delivery from the farm just five down the road from Treadway Gardens. The big tomatoes are going strong but the cherry tomatoes are few and far between. The last of the fresh basil bundles are done. People continue to ask for cantaloupe and we give them the news that those are done for the season. The frequent comment, "I was hoping for one more delivery." The zinnias that are just for our young customers to choose are fading away. The monarchs and hummingbirds that flitted among the zinnias have moved along on their southern migrations.

The pumpkins, mums, corn stalks, gourds of all sizes, straw bales, and all kinds of apples are now in the forefront. Watching  parents bring their little ones to pick out pumpkins is such a joy. What an important decision! The other day a woman bought over $200 worth of pumpkins. Her neighborhood has a pumpkin decorating contest and she loves to participate. I need to find the apple "cheat sheet" for which apples are good for eating or baking and their flavor profiles.

We're nearing the end of our produce-selling season. October 31 is the last day that we are open for business and "The Garden" will be quiet until Memorial Day weekend 2024.

Sigh.

I love this job.

  1. The best apple, is the one from the nearest tree. Glen at Glen and Friends
    https://www.youtube.com/@GlenAndFriendsCooking did a recipe recently from an old cookbook, and described well how apples were just apples, what ever grew in the neighborhood until the last 75 years. He has a very common sense approach to cooking and baking.
