The object formerly known as the planet Pluto was discovered on February 18, 1930 at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, Pluto officially became Pluto on March 24, 1930 and its name was announced on May 1, 1930. On August 24, 2006, 76 years after its discovery, the International Astronomical Union demoted the much-loved Pluto from the ninth planet from the Sun to one of the five dwarf planets.
