chocolate chip cookies {february 3, 2022}

Last weekend we were in Cleveland for our son and daughter-in-law’s gender reveal party. They asked me to make chocolate chip cookies for their gathering. This request brought back so many happy memories from the joyful and lively but hectic days of raising four children who were under six year apart in age.

When my Gang of Four was little and no one in school yet, the kitchen would be full of taste testers standing on chairs or sitting on the counter waiting for a bite of that yummy mixture of butter and sugar and then the dough and finally the finished cookies. When they were in school, chocolate chip cookies were the favorite for after school goodies. Slumber parties entailed midnight chocolate chip cookie baking. Athletic banquets brought out dozens of CCCs and my homemade cookies were always gone first before the bags of Chips Ahoys that parents bought on their way to the banquet. Chocolate chip cookies have been a constant in this passage of time. And now my youngest child, my baby, is going to be a father and he asked me to bake chocolate chip cookies to celebrate his baby.

I was all ready to make my tried and true recipe that I’ve used for years and then I received an email from a woman who had a marvelous bakery in Dayton and was sharing it with those who signed up to be on her email list. I read the recipe over and over thought “Why not?” Sure it was a brand new recipe for a very special party with quite a few guests but again, why not? So I did and true to my homemade chocolate chip cookies, none were left.

The Tart's Chocolate Chip Cookies

Recipe by Megan Smith with some tweaks by me

Makes around 30 cookies

10 1/2 ounces All Purpose Flour (I used King Arthur Flour)

3/4 tsp kosher salt

1/2 tsp baking soda

1 1/2 sticks unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled

7 ounces dark brown sugar

3 1/2 ounces granulated sugar

1 large egg and 1 large egg yolk

2 tsp vanilla extract

2 cups chocolate chips (I used dark, semi-sweet, and white chips)

Preheat your oven to 325 degrees and line 1 or 2 large baking sheets with parchment paper. Go ahead and get all of your ingredients in place -- the recipe will come together quickly!

Whisk the flour, baking soda, and salt in a bowl and set aside.

Once the butter has melted, cool it slightly and then put it in a clean mixing bowl.

With a mixer mix together the butter and sugars until blended, but don't go crazy on trying to make it fluffy or anything. Just incorporate it all together. Then, add the egg and egg yolk, and vanilla, and mix until all is a cohesive blend.

Dump the flour mixture and mix well with the butter mixture, just until all of the flour is fully mixed in. Then add the chocolate chips. You can always lessen the amount of chocolate, depending on your liking.

Place 1/8 c. (2 T) cookie dough blobs on each parchment sheet. Put the cookies into the oven and bake for 15 -19 minutes, checking on them for your desired doneness. Remove from the oven and place the cookies on a cooling rack.
