wordy wednesday...anthropomorphic {december 6, 2023}

My daughter and I took a walk along the High Line and noticed Cosima Von Bonin's WHAT IF THEY BARK?. It's a group of anthropomorphic fish sculptures installed above the park’s iconic 10th Avenue Square. The fish look like a military band ensemble, wearing theatrical costumes, playing musical instruments, and holding checkered missiles. This installation shows the artist’s long-running interest in marine life and this humorous composition recalls the statue arrangement of ancient Greek temples. Instead of gods and heroes here the artist places sea creatures on land interacting with one another and doing human activities such as playing music. The figures adorn the top of the railing of the Sunken Overlook as if playing a concert for visitors resting on the seating steps below, adding a playful element to the striking view up 10th Avenue.

The little shark on the right caught my grandma eye because Little Grandson is at the age where he loves the Baby Shark song. (And yes, I've listened to that song enough times to know all the words and motions).

  2. That's a very clever art installation. I haven't been to NYC in 2 years. I think it's time for another visit.
