days on my grandparents' farm {august 21, 2022}

My childhood summers.

My grandparents lived on a farm outside of Bloomington, IL. They had a large vegetable garden and it was an adventure to go to the field and pick corn, green beans, peas, tomatoes, and asparagus. After we picked the veggies, we sat on the shady back stoop snapping beans, shelling peas, and husking corn. Grandma taught us how to find the sweet spot on asparagus where the tough and tender parts of the stalk met. Grandpa told us it was OK to eat the cherry tomatoes as we picked them. Better than any candy.

The farm is no longer there, a casualty of corporate expansion. Even though the farm is no longer, the memories are lasting.

  1. My grandparents lived around the corner on the same farm, and had a similar garden, no asparagus.
