A little fun grocery shopping and in the kitchen ~
Last year my favorite grocery store carried Driscoll White Strawberries. This year it's selling the Driscoll Rosé Berries and "(t)heir blushing pastel hue lets you know you’re about to enjoy something extra special — and extra delicious." They are sweet and tart with pineapple and peach aromas. I made a fruit salad with blueberries, gooseberries, and these strawberries.
Strawberry cherries...these have a high natural sugar content, a low acid content, and is delicate like a Ranier, so it needs to be handled with care. At $11.99 per little package it didn't make it into my cart.
On our way home from Cleveland, we stopped at Grandpa's Cheese Barn just off of I-71 in Ashland, OH. The Steakhouse Onion cheese tastes like French Onion soup and the Peanut Butter Marshmallow Spread brings lots of yummy possibilities to two flavors that belong together. We like dipping mini pretzel sticks in it...sweet, salty, gooey, crunchy. A topper for vanilla ice cream is next.
A trip to Whole Foods yielded gooseberries and black lentils. Gooseberries in a fruit salad cut the sweetness of the other fruits. Black lentils, also known as black Beluga lentils, earned this name because the small, shiny beads resemble caviar. They are rich in protein and fiber and are good in brain health cooking. I made Addictive Black Lentils with Spinach using burrata cheese.
And a not so fun find...my three cherry tomato plants were looking good a couple days ago but Mama Deer and her two babies found them to be a delectable delight. Pesky critters. I'll leave the plants so the deer can finish them off and next year have some fencing around my garden to keep them out.
It has been years since we stopped at Grampa's Cheese Barn, it is fun. Are they still in the basement of the barn?
ReplyDeleteGrandpa's Cheese Barn has a couple locations. The barn where we stopped has a main level and a second story. There's another barn full of candies and chocolates.
