wordy wednesday: mosaic {may 10, 2023}

Piggybacking onto the recent Chicago trip...

Jim Bachor is a Chicago artist who fills potholes in Chicago's streets with mosaics. To Bachor, a pothole isn't a nuisance, it's a canvas. Like a true art vigilante, Bachor makes his work at his own expense. The process of making a mural, in the middle of the street, after filling potholes — which isn’t exactly legal — is a slow tedious process done on hands and knees surrounded by car fumes.

Bachor's pothole works typically aren't political but he was not a fan of President Trump.  He has twice used his pothole art to take aim at Trump. In 2017 he created a "LIAR" mosaic, complete with a gold-surrounded Russian flag, near Trump International Hotel and Tower. In October 2019 "LIAR 2" with a Ukrainian flag showed up, again by Trump Tower.

On March 7, 2020, my now son-in-law asked T for his blessing to marry our daughter. He made a plan for the proposal and then a party afterward. COVID hit and shut the world down and he waited until August 2021 to propose. During that time, Jim Bachor installed a series of pothole artwork in Chicago's Uptown neighborhood called "The Holy Trinity," which poked fun at what we humans oddly worshipped during the pandemic: toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and alcohol. Bachor made prints of the "Holy Trinity" I bought the toilet paper print, had it framed and gave it to L&A at their engagement. A gentle reminder that even though they went through a lot of frustration and uncertainty to get to this point, love will wipe away a lot of sh*t.

On Jim Bachor's website he has a list of his pothole installations. I plan to do a pothole tour on a future visit. https://www.bachor.com/4600-north-kenton---map
