Hope House for the Homeless in Findlay, OH, provides transitional, residential shelter for homeless women and homeless women with children in Hancock County. In 1990 Sister Karen Elliott, a Sister of the Precious Blood, helped start Hope House.
Sister Karen’s first assignment was in Findlay. She was hired by the pastor at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, and the St. Michael School principal, to teach junior high and to serve as coordinator of youth ministry for the parish.
It was while Elliott was living at the former convent behind St. Michael's downtown church that she began to see an unmet need involving homeless women and children. She recalled moms ringing the doorbell at 11 p.m. with no place to stay. One morning, Sister Karen woke up at the convent and found a woman sleeping in the front yard. She talked with the woman and asked her why she was sleeping there. The woman responded that she felt safe in this spot. This was at a time when Sister Karen was the only nun living in the convent. She saw a community need, and after some time at her urging, the building later opened as Findlay Hope House. Sister Karen had hope in heart for these women and because of her tenacity, these women have hope in their hearts for better lives.
Our friend is Chairman of the Board for Hope House and she invited us to the annual fundraiser. One of the fundraisers was to buy cupcakes that were displayed on all the tables; you could go to any table you wanted to choose your cupcake. One cupcake had sprinkles in it and whoever the lucky person was to choose it won $1000. Long story short, I wanted a chocolate cupcake piled with chocolate icing and sprinkled with chocolate chips. T went to a nearby table and nabbed one. It turned out to be the winning cupcake! In the spirit of the evening, the proceeds from this cupcake went to Hope House to continue its mission of growing hope for more women.
