First snow of the fall. It's just a dusting and doesn't last long but it snowed. People are already complaining on social media. I don't get it. It's mid-November in Ohio and snow happens. It's a fact of life.

And then there are red leaves that grow on a tree filled with gold leaves. Contrasts.

And it's Saturday in Columbus, Ohio, and the chilly weather doesn't stop Ohio State football fans from cheering for their Buckeyes. O-H...

bernie in the house! {november 12, 2021}

Sweet little brown dog in the house for the next 10 days! Bernie is 9 years old, eight weeks into his recovery from ACL surgery, but is able to go on walks. Once he's used to his new surroundings, we take a walk. He's been in the car for 2.5 hours.

On our walk we pass a mailbox and Bernie stops to sniff. Snapdragons are still holding on. This is one of the slow pace discoveries that dog walkers are privileged to stumble upon. Blessed.

veterans day {november 11, 2021}

A fiery sunrise provides the opening act to this November 11. This reminds me of the saying, "Red sky in the morning, sailors' warning; Red sky at night, sailors' delight."

Today is Veterans Day. Veterans Day, originally known as Armistice Day, is a federal holiday in the United States observed annually on November 11, for honoring military veterans of the US Armed Forces. It coincides with other holidays including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day which are celebrated in other countries that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I. Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. At the urging of major U.S. veteran organizations, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.

burgoo and a walk in the park {november 10, 2021}

I got my introduction to burgoo when I lived in Owensboro, Kentucky and my parents liked to get burgoo from the Moonlite Barbecue. Back then, when I was in 5th grade, I wasn’t a fan of burgoo. My brothers, sister, and I didn't like it so we called it "bird doo." Kids.

So what are the ingredients that make this stew? It's a hearty mix of meats and vegetables simmered low and slow.

• There are at least three meats: Traditional burgoo is made with mutton and chicken, and earlier versions included all manner of seasonal meats, like venison, game birds, squirrel, raccoon, rabbit, possum and others, hence the nickname “Roadkill Soup” or “Game Meat Stew”. Today you’ll more commonly find a combination of beef, chicken and pork
• Some form of tomato product, whether chopped fresh tomatoes, tomato paste, or barbecue sauce.
• Beans, usually lima beans or black-eyed peas.
• Corn and potatoes are a must, any other vegetable is acceptable.

My most favorite grocery store, Dorothy Lane Market, makes in-store soups and burgoo is on the rotation. Whenever burgoo is on the soup stand, I buy a large container and it’s what’s for dinner that night.

After grocery shopping, I stopped at Lincoln Park for a walk to admire the fall foliage. The fresh air and colors did not disappoint.

And to make this beautiful day more perfect, Happy Birthday to my beautiful daughter-in-love. She is such a perfect gift to our family 💜

3 gratitudes {november 9, 2021}

Gratitude 1:

Grateful for music. This morning I turned on my car and Guns N' Roses "Sweet Child O' Mine" started my day off. This song in the Sheryl Crow version was my Mother/Son dance with A at his wedding. It always makes me smile.

Cleaning out the garage so two cars can stay out of the upcoming winter weather.

The last time any of us were in UD Arena was March 2020. T and AG went to the last game of the 2019-2020 season and that's when AG asked T for his blessing to propose to our daughter. Good memories and it's so good to be back in the Arena!

new moon {november 8, 2021}

The November sky will put on a show lasting the whole month: Sunset planets, a partial lunar eclipse, and the return of the winter stars. After sunset, three planets, Jupiter, Saturn, and Venus, will join tonight's crescent moon. Soon Orion the hunter and the Pleiades star cluster return to the winter sky and that's a quick what's up for this month.
